Autumn in Devon, we think, is a particularly lovely time of the year. There’s a mellowness in the air, the leaves are changing colours to soft yellows and oranges, and often there’s a mist in the morning that gives way to a warm sunny afternoon.

It’s also a much quieter time of year for visitors but there’s still plenty to do.

There are a wonderful selection of National Trust properties within easy driving distance of Twistgates. You can visit many of them until the end of October, but the grounds are open all year. Killerton, Knightshayes, Barrington Court and Montacute House to name a few.

For the colours of autumn in Devon wander around beautiful gardens. Our suggestions are Forde Abbey and Hestercombe and, until the end of October, Burrow Farm (just up the road from us). You can easily spend a day at any of them, and even better, cafés on hand, plants to buy, and dogs are welcome.

If you haven’t done so already Exeter is well worth exploring, the cathedral has many events to investigate (see their website), the quayside is a lovely area to enjoy a coffee overlooking the water front, the RAMM museum always has something of interest going on as well as a gift shop stocked with unusual items.

Twistgates Farm Cottages are ideally located in East Devon, we’re surrounded by countryside with walks from the front door, and the Jurassic Coast is an easy drive.Coast or countryside? Have both while staying at Twistgates Farm Cottages

We’d recommend a walk along the South West Coast Path, perhaps taking in the Anchor pub at Seatown for lunch, or the Masons Arms at Branscombe . While you’re in Branscombe do take a look at St Winifred’s. It is among the oldest and most architecturally significant parish churches of Devon and probably dates back to about 995.

We want you to be very comfortable in our cottages so after a day out close the curtains, light the fire, and relax. And if you’re staying In Apple Loft (a very romantic hide-away just for two) you may be tempted to soak in the deep slipper bath.

This autumn we’d love to welcome you to Twistgates Farm Cottages. We can offer short breaks and full weeks and we try to be as flexible as possible on start days.
